Description : It was my first day on the job, and I wanted to leave my mark.
Boy, that may be the one thing I succeeded at… In fact, I bet they’re still talking about this today nearly 20 years later (ROFL).
I flew out to Amarillo, TX for my first sales call as the new Territory Manager for a glass block window company.
I was on the rebound from a brutal year during which I had lost my job, and wiped out our bank account and retirement savings.
I was teetering on the edge of bankruptcy and divorce and needed things to turn around.
So I accepted a job at 1/6 my previous salary, moved my family to small town Texas from the suburbs of Chicago and started working in a new industry with new products that I knew nothing about.
Yet, I as so excited to get started and prove myself to my new company.
I flew to Amarillo, picked up my rental car and made a series of sales calls. Frankly, I don’t remember much about those. It’s what happened next that earned me the moniker “Wrecking Ball Rosenbaum”…
I stopped by a gas station to top off the tank of the rental car before returning to the airport. When I got out of the car to insert the hose, I discovered that I had pulled up about two feet too far.
So I got back in the car and inched it back closer to the pump.
EEYYEE… CRACK, CRUNCH. BANG!!!!
The sound of twisting metal was deafening, as the open door wrapped around the concrete post protecting the gas pump from idiots like me.
I quickly shifted into forward to salvage the car door, but it was too late.
The door fell off the car and was laying on the ground next to the gas pumps.
The manager came running out of the gas station calling me every name in the book as I picked up the door and tried to stuff it into the trunk of the car.
I jumped into the car, which was now converted into a Jeep and quickly sped away to lick my wounds and call my company to report on how my first day went.
Yes, the rest of the day was much more memorable than the sales call. I had to call my new boss and tell him that I had destroyed a 30k car. I had to call Hertz and tell them the same thing. I missed my flight and had to call Sherri and tell her I would be coming home until the next day.
Not quite the first day I had expected when the alarm went off at 4:30AM!
Have you ever had a day like that?
I bet you have.
I’m sure whatever happened was different, but I’m quite positive that you have had experiences that were either funny, heartwarming, horrendous at the time that make great stories today.
Just like this one.
Yes, every word of it is true.
And while it’s kind of embarrassing to admit, I know that sharing it with you brings a smile to your face at a time that we all need to smile. I bet it even brings back a chuckle or too from a “rough day” that you had.
I also know that it brings you and me a little bit closer. It makes me seem a bit more personable to you and notches up the “Know, Like and Trust” dial so that you want to read more emails from me.
That’s the power of telling stories.
When you tell stories, people listen.
It’s a skillset that each of us has, but few use properly.
Later this week, I’m going to hold a training class with somebody that’s doing some amazing work that can really help you. Having a good story to tell is one of the ways that you can jump off to a quick start.
Start working on your story today and then watch for the details of this upcoming training in my email tomorrow.
